Downy Woodpecker
Picoides pubescens
The Downy is the smallest North American
Woodpecker, not much bigger then a sparrow.
They are often mistaken for the larger Hairy
Woodpecker that has nearly identical markings
but has a much longer bill. The Hairy’s bill
is nearly the same length as its head while
the Downy’s bill is typically only half
the length of the head.
